Driving Directions from Managua Airport
Coming out of the airport, turn RIGHT onto (Carretera
Norte).
At the first rotunda continue straight. This
rotunda will have a busy bus depot and large market – don’t get confused – continue
straight thru.
At the second rotunda go RIGHT -
onto a tree lined road. You will pass large white tanks along
the right side of the road.
After about 7K there will be a funky intersection – stay RIGHT – turning
onto a very smooth main road going toward Masaya. You will
soon pass a large manufacturing plant called ASTRO. Buses should
say to Masaya and Tipitapa.
You will come to a T-junction with a white arched building directly
in front. There will be a sign that says Masaya and Granada and Penas
Blancas to the left and Managua to the right – GO LEFT.
NOTE: Make sure to stop properly at
the stop sign here. There
are always cops here. Don’t stop and ask the policia
for directions – they’ll find something to give you a
ticket for!!
Soon after turning left toward Granada you will pass a Papa
Johns Pizza. REMEMBER this – this will be your landmark when returning to
the airport!
At the next rotunda – continue
STRAIGHT thru – do not take first right or you will be on the scenic/hectic tour through the center of Masaya!
At the next rotunda – continue STRAIGHT thru – do not take first
right or
you will be on the scenic/hectic tour through the center of Masaya!
Now you should be on a nice 4-lane divided highway… Look for a
MAXI PALI to stop at if you wish to buy snacks or provisions
(they take credit cards!)
At the next rotunda – take a hard right – otherwise
you will drive all the way in to the city of Granada. This rotunda is
a bit different than the others as it has a bike path
with yellow markers. There should be a big factory on the right
shortly after.
You are now heading toward CATARINA on a smoothly
paved 2-lane road.
Look for a sign that says CATARINA 6K. You will pass Pueblo Blanco
Artist Villa.
Somewhere through here is a new rotunda – continue in a way that would
be considered straight thru (meaning don’t take your first right turn
off the rotunda!).
After you pass through Catarina (a village noted for
its beautiful plants), you will
pass through the small towns San Juan de Oriente (a
village noted for its
beautiful pottery), and then the small towns of Diria
and Diriomo.
Stay on the main road toward NANDAIME. As you
approach Volcan Mombocho you will come to a rotunda of sorts – more
like a traffic triangle – stay right and then take a hard RIGHT again
in front of a factory at the base of Mombacho (if you go left you will
end up in Granada)
As you approach Nandaime, you are approaching the Pan American
Highway.
As you approach the Pan American highway you will
come to a Y junction with a
grassy median (and most likely a large pink billboard of Ortega.) Stay
left here and turn LEFT (south) toward NANDAIME.
Follow the Pan-American Highway south
to toward RIVAS…
Look for a sign that now says Nandaime 1K and Rivas 46K.
About 19 kilometers past NANDAIME, you will cross over the
PUENTA OCHOMOGO BRIDGE and about 40 kilometers further you will
reach RIVAS.
Upon arriving in RIVAS you will turn off the PAN AMERICAN
Highway.
(Look for a small brightly painted corner stall - MANGOs - for tire
repairs.)
Turn RIGHT, onto a small straight cobblestone street. At the end of this
street, turn RIGHT again, and you will be heading for the next small
town, TOLA.
Should you arrive at a roundabout on the
PAN-AM highway in Rivas, you’ve gone too far
HOWEVER, it is a great place (last
place) to top off your gas and buy supplies. Go straight
through the roundabout and find the Pan-American Grocery Store just
behind the Gas Station on the right hand side. Gas Station also sells
very good fried chicken and wine… after fueling and feeding - go back
the cobblestone street and turn left.
You may see signs for Tola, Rancho Santa, Punta Teonaste. After about
1/2K on the cobblestone street turn right on the main road to Tola.
From RIVAS to TOLA to PLAYA GUASACATE
Pass the Hospital in Rivas as you head toward TOLA and watch the speed
bumps the entire way to Tola! After crossing a one-lane bridge,
you will be in TOLA.
In TOLA you will pass a large church (on your right). Beyond the church
is a public square (a good place to buy fruits and veggies if it is
early in the day). At the far end of the square is a stop sign and to
the left a police station.
Turn LEFT at the police station – (make sure your seatbelts are on!)
Travel maybe two blocks. Turn RIGHT at the sign that says “Rancho
Santana.”
You will now be on a dirt road and will have about 30-45 minutes left to
travel. Stay straight on this road through a hilly section of road
before reaching PLAYA GUASACATE
You will pass the gated communities of: Guacalito de la Isla, Iguanas,
Los Perros, & Rancho Santana. Just beyond Rancho Santana and after the
villages of Limon1 and Limon2, the road will fork – STAY LEFT.
Continue to follow the blue & white signs to PLAYA GUASACATE
(Another common sign you will see in the region that will take you in
the right direction are the yellow signs to Punta Teonaste.)
You may see signs for Playa Popoyo and Magnificant Rock – do not turn
there!
When you arrive in SALINAS (Salinas de Nahualapa) look for a blue &
white school with a small library (la biblioteca los Tres Ernestos) and
the old wooden salt barns. You will pass thru most of the town before
you come to a small hill. There is a bus stop along the river here. At
the top of the small hill turn LEFT and cross over the steel
bridge.
As you are driving, look to the right and you will soon see the white
villas of Two Brothers perched on the highest hill.
Drive past the The Holy(Holly)Ground Bakery, round the bend, and take
your first RIGHT onto Bean Hill Road. Take your first LEFT to continue
on Bean Hill Road. Curve right at the well house. Switch now to 4-wheel
drive if you haven’t already – it will be steep in places. Continue up
the hill. Pass through the gates – mind the BUMP at the cattle guard -
and continue up the steep concrete drive to the very top beyond the
pool!
Life is a journey… as is the road to Two Brothers!
The entire journey is roughly 160 Kilometers and should take
approximately three hours. Enjoy the journey! Stop and buy vegetables or
cold coconut milk. Try out your Spanish and ask directions to the
nearest town – “Donde esta Rivas?” Listen for howler monkeys as you
cross the riverbeds. Make the journey and enjoy the adventure!
